This week in ISM I worked on my resume. When I worked on my resume it was a very helpful experience because it helps me realize where I stand. When I listed everything that would help me achieve my goal to get a suitable mentor, I realized the list that I could put down was actually very small. It definitely was not easy to create a resume because I had so little experience and so little hard skills that would help me in the medical professional field. Another difficult part was finding who I wanted as a reference because I needed to find people who would most likely give me a positive review but also were in a position where they were able to criticize me and give honest feedback if they were asked. On top of all of that I knew I had to stay away from the “cookie-cutter” image that so many ISM kids of the past had. This seems simple but was actually very complicated because I feel like for modern-day students “cookie-cutter” is all we've been taught. It was actually more difficult than I thought to apply creativity to my resume and make it stand out instead of having the normal and common resume templates.
After completing my resume I was able to start calls to the medical professionals I have chosen on my interview sheet. The only problem was that most of the numbers to contact the doctors were numbers that did not reach the actual doctor but the overall office that would then transfer me to the hospital. This proved very frustrating because I would call one number and then be transferred 5 or 6 times before I could actually speak to someone who work at the same hospital and even then once I got to that point, most of the time the person who I wanted to talk to you was not in the office so I would leave voice message. With the little amount of times I've actually been able to talk to a professional that I was actually trying to get hold of, I have decided to actually go in person to schedule these interviews. Hopefully if I'm actually there and I'm able to make an in person first impression they will take me more seriously and I will be able to schedule the interviews and better assess who I will be learning from this next year. The only problem with this idea is that most of the doctors offices are only open when I'm in school or they stay open just a couple hours after I get off from school so in order for me to go and request an appointment I would have to go immediately after school which is a little difficult at this point since I do not have a car yet. Hopefully someone will call me back and I will be able to interview them soon.
By next week I hope to finish my entire twenty-five interviews because I would like to be ahead of my peers simply in order to ensure that I am able to find a mentor that best suits my needs before that mentor has taken by someone else. I am also planning on going to the ISM Business Symposium so hopefully that will help me get mentor as well.
