This week was a week that made me very self aware. I was able to accomplish a lot in terms of of my ISM progression. Even though things didn't go exactly as planned, I still was able to gain knowledge and improve myself. Even with homecoming this week, I managed to stay on track with my ISM work and ended up achieving more than ever.
Despite having two interviews scheduled their week, I was not able to attend either of them. My first interview was with Dr. Amy C. Brenski on Monday. After driving to the office, I ended up waiting in the office for almost an hour before the receptionist told me that the doctor is more than likely not going to see today since the doctor was working in Dallas and running a surgery that was going late. However, I was able to reschedule to the following Thursday which worked for me. This experience made me realized why exactly doctor’s schedules were so varied. Until this point I did not understand why, unless that doctor worked in the ER or trauma, there would be such difficulty for scheduling. Most doctors only performed scheduled surgeries and actually had more flexible hours if they were in a private practice. But then I realized, that once a doctor steps in a surgery room they can't step out until the patient is ready. Even if they schedule a surgery, with small mishaps more than likely, they probably won't be able to attend as the patient will always be priority. As for my other interview, they called for reschedule ad the doctor had to work later than expected. Since this interview was with a receptionist and RN, I was able to see how the schedule of a hospital does not only affect the doctor, but the entire staff as well. If I go into this field, I need to be able to withstand long hours and be adaptable to such hours. In addition, the workers around me need to be just as adaptable as well.
While working on my portfolio I was able to see my entire year in iSM thus far condensed into a small binder. It wa amazing to see how much I have grown and the immense change in my writing amen professionalism in these few months alone. It definitely gave me encouragement to keep working and improving so that by the end of the year I become a complete professional. In addition, it was difficult to come up with a theme or image for my field. This is because I have raised that while pediatric surgery may seem like a soft field because it deals with children, it is actually the most intense role d for the exact same reason. Trying to show both aspects was more difficult than expected but I was able to understand how to display it by the end.
Overall, this week gave some perspective in where I've come and where I need to be. Even though I have improved, I am in no way in a position to stop.By final presentation night, I really want to be able to sell myself as a professional with the complete knowledge. Hopefully, by next week I will have completed an additional two interviews and schedule more as they come.
